Not so for
Gordon Moore. He saw an exponentially
increasing man-month cost to design.
As you can see from this figure, it held for many years. But you have to picture what VLSI was like
in the 1970s. People used computer
aided design--CAD--to capture the image of the design, but there was little
to no automation. Design rules were
checked manually by printing out the masks and checking them by hand on an
easel. Better methods, better
automation eventually broke this trend.
